Christian Diplomatic Mission
Welcome to The Tomb and the home of the Christian Diplomatic Mission.* Memberships allows you to post comments and communicate with me and the other members. It is a security measure to reduce spam and all the junk that usually comes with a web site. * You may want to use RSS to keep up on additions to The Tomb. Since I don't post new material everyday RSS will feed changes to you so you don't have to keep checking back. If you don't know how to use RSS just drop me a note. Looking for books? Search using the Amazon box on the lower left of the main window or visit The Tomb's on-line bookstore. I've included my recommendations for books in Biblical studies, church history, and computer topics. |

Quilt Sale Success
I'm sitting at the debriefing meeting for the quilt sale this year. The sale was great fun again with beautiful quilts and tasty traditional food. Verenika and borscht and zweiback and peppernuts, mmmm. I was on stage for much of the live auction and felt horrible as I saw so many quilts go at a fration of their real value. However, the numbers at the meeting today are definitly encouraging. Attendance was up significantly with many new people this year. We were up to around 950 from around 830 last year. Even though the quilts fetched far less than I would have hoped the amount we are able to contribute to MCC world relief will actually stay the same and might be a little higher. The folks in charge of the sale have done a great job of management and increased efficiency. Next year we are looking forward to even greater attendance and are working on some big events to help publicize the sale. See the photo section for some pics from the sale.

Apple Butter Time
Fall is apple time. One of my favorites is apple butter, the most labor intensive of all the tasty joys of the apple. We started at about 1:00 PM and didn't finish until about 10:00 PM. Out of it we got just over 1.5 dozen pints. Well worth it though. See some pics here.

I'm a Fundamentalist
Yes, I said that. According to Wikipedia (ok, not authoritative but accurate enough for this forum) fundamentalism is: "Fundamentalism refers to a "deep and totalistic commitment" to a belief in, and strict adherence to a set of basic principles (often religious in nature), a reaction to perceived doctrinal compromises with modern social and political life." WikipediaThat's about right. A "deep an totalistic commitment" and a "reaction to percieved doctrinal compromises". Re-reading and teaching a bit again on the Schleitheim Confession got me thinking again about my adopted theological roots and re-confirmed the directions I've been taking my life over the past several years.

Mennonite Quilt Sale!
Coming up on 8 November 2008 is the MCC World Relief Sale in Brooklyn Park, MN. If you want to support a good cause or if you just love art come see this great show. Quilts are a long-standing tradition in the Anabaptist communities (Mennonite, Amish, Hutterite, et alia) and are far from extinct. For a year many have been toiling over these amazing works of art and here is a chance to see all of them and, for a lucky few, bid on them. To see these beautiful quilts displayed come in the morning before they start to be auctioned off (action starts about 12). For details and a preview of the quilts see: http://www.tcmccreliefsale.org/sale.html

It's finally up. I've launched a new site devoted specifically to computer training. The training business has been so fast and furious lately that it was time to get a more professional and focused front end to it. If you've been coming here to check the calendar of classes or get book recommendations please reset your bookmarks to SawyerTraining.com. The calendar will be shared between the sites so you can be assured it will be up-to-date.

What's Hot in Training
With many requests coming in for training and many concerned about maximizing their training budgets I thought I would mention two hot topics. Office 2007 and InDesign. Many individuals and companies are switching over to these applications. Office 2007 from Office 2003 and InDesign from both PageMaker and QuarkXpress. In both cases many users do not need a full set of courses to learn the differences. Instead, consider a transition course. Often a one-day course or, in some cases, a half-day is all that is needed to hit the ground running.
Office 2007: The Transition and QuarkXpress to InDesign: InTransition are two courses I am running to meet the needs of users and companies making the switch. If you would like more information about these courses click on "more". You can contact me anytime about these or other customized course offerings.

Two new classes added
Two last minute classes were added for this week. On Tues and Thurs (16 & 18 Sept) I will be teaching Basic Computing and Keyboarding in the evening at NHCC.
On Tuesday, 16 Sept, I will be teaching Intro to Web Design Languages at Dakota County Technical College. This intro will cover basic HTML/XHTML and CSS for use in troubleshooting. This is my first course at DCTC. It looks very likely I will be teaching more courses for them as they ramp up their new program in web design.
Seats are still open for both classes. Students can register for DCTC classes at 651.406.4754 or visit their website at www.customizedtraining.com

All back safely
Just a quick update. I just returned from the protests today and wanted to let everyone know all three of us from EMC are back safe and sound. A few scary close calls with pepper spray and rubber bullets but no injuries or arrests. Overall I have to say the Legal Observing was a very positive experience. Right now I am exhausted so more to follow tomorrow. Please continue to keep up-to-date via http://tc.indymedia.org and keep everyone's safety in prayer.
